Things
to Ask the Judge

  • Where does he/she want the dogs lined up when entering the ring?
  • Doe he/she want them in Catalog Order?
  • In Breed - Dogs up fron, any order of Catalog Order followed by Winner's Dog and Winner's Bitch?
  • Will he/she allow change of handler before all the dogs have been examined with his/her permission?
  • When hospitality comes around would he/she want coffee, soda etc.?
Armbands
  • When handing out armbands, check off the number in the catalog as you hand out the armband.
  • If a dog is reported "Absent" mark the catalog and the armband with an "A" or "ABS"
  • It is usually a good rule not to hand out armbands for the afternoon judging in the morning. )They have a tendency to get lost)
  • Most superintendents have given odd numbers to dogs and even numbers to bitches.

Callng
Classes

  • When calling classes into the ring, call the Breed, the Class, the Numbers and indicate whether in Catalog Order or Any Order.
  • Check the armband numbers to make sure the exhibitor has the correct armband number. (This helps the Judge - it is however the judge's responsibility to make sure the armband nubmers for the class are correct).
  • If the armband number has not been picked up when the class is called, hold the number high over your head and call the number. (This is a courtesy to the exhibitor).
  • Inform the Judge of any reported absentees and/or any numbers that have not been picked up.
  • Set out the proper ribbons/rosettes for the Class by the Judge's Book
Misc.
  • Call for Clean-up when necessary.
  • If paper, armbands, etc. are droped in the ring, pick them up and dispose properly.
  • Make sure no one other than those exhibiting in the class are in the ring.
  • Tell the Exhibitor of each second placed dog in each class to be ready to re-enter the ring after Winners has been selected. They are called back for Reserve placement.
  • Mark your Catalog with the placements. (The Steward's Book is referred to in case there is a problem with the Judge's Book).
  • Have a Black Marking Pen handy in case a numer is missing and you have to put the number on an armband.
  • Be courteous to everyone.

TABLE DOGS

Many dogs are examined on the table. If you are going to Steward in a ring where the table is necessary for examination ask the Judge where he/she would like the table placed.

When that Breed is to be judged place the table at that spot. Make sure the table is level and solidly placed.
